It codifies a few more combat options than Basic - like a cleave rule and overrun style attacks. There's a mortal wounds scheme that leads to permanent injuries for characters that drop below zero hit points, bringing the gritty. A number of fighter type classes have extra damage built into their class progression.

On top of that, it adds a series of proficiencies similar to BECMI skills - but many of these are combat oriented, like 3E feats - weapon finesse, to use DEX instead of STR to hit, swashbuckling to give AC boosts to light-armored characters, fighting styles, that kind of stuff. They're controversial - halfway between Rules Cyclopedia and 3rd Edition.

Overall, an ACKS character is more powerful than a typical old school guy because of the slight boosts to damage and combat efficiency from the proficiency system.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18031181424520125213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353391426294254427.post-85775304931252980362013-01-31T01:52:50.918-05:002013-01-31T01:52:50.918-05:00What particularly makes the ACKS combat system dif...What particularly makes the ACKS combat system different from AD&D and/or other systems, like Labyrinth Lord? I've been hearing a lot of good buzz, and I'm curious about these kind of details. The new templates will be a boon, as my players don't have the taste for drawn out character creation (choices demand some understanding of the consequences - it is one thing explaining the differences between D&D classes, another between 'proficiencies' and the like).Andy Bartletthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06683770320671028815noreply@blogger.com
