Adventurers returning to town have to pay taxes or salvage fees to the local lord anyway, so as they tally their wealth back in the adventurer's guild hall, that's what gets posted to the scoreboard.<br /><br />Here's a funny thought to consider - and you have to be comfortable with the insane amounts of wealth characters pull out of a dungeon. If a megadungeon is large enough for a couple of different adventuring parties to reach the higher levels, it has to have at least 2.5 to 3 million gold pieces of treasure in there - and probably quite a bit more.
