ACKS II was meant to just be ACKS with the supplementary books (PC, HFH, Axioms) baked in since it was getting hard to run a game with three books and half a dozen magazines.

Then Archon decided that he was not happy just republishing with prior material, so he decided to revise the rule language to make it clearer on some topics.

Then he decided that some of the mechanics were at fault and kept leading to the same issues across groups so they needed revising.

Then he decided that the rules were incomplete since people kept asking for certain topics to be addressed so he added them.

Then the OGL fiasco happened and he rewrote the entire god damn thing in like four months to split from the OGL.

The decision to split them out was because of the size. The Revised Rulebook is 550 pages without art or formatting. The Judge's Journal is 500. The Monstrous Manual is 450. This isn't including the things that have been cut.

Autarch's Patreon has the rules there, but if you drop Archon a message on the Discord he might send you the test documents: https://discord.gg/cRpNcse2kvPrince of Cindershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14954378176674635967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353391426294254427.post-2172565353302093492023-10-10T22:30:28.730-04:002023-10-10T22:30:28.730-04:00Diving in. My players once constructed a giant smoker out of a wheelbarrow in order to sedate a hive full of giant bees.

Your artist is fantastic, by the way! Wonderful action composition.

I'll look forward to your post about the differences between rule sets. Ten years ago, I played in a DCC RPG campaign using Rappan Athuk (intended for Swords & Wizardry I believe) and the AD&D 2e adventure Return to White Plume Mountain. It was definitely interesting seeing how the quirks of DCC (e.g., unreliable magic) interacted with the expectations of an OSR megadungeon and then a more plot-oriented 2e adventure.Jesse Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10802754799848483493noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353391426294254427.post-22594297098740429112023-09-04T17:20:16.029-04:002023-09-04T17:20:16.029-04:00I have gone halfway to xenomorphs myself -> htt...I have gone halfway to xenomorphs myself -> https://wanderinggamist.blogspot.com/2020/04/bug-orcs.htmlJohnhttp://wanderinggamist.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353391426294254427.post-40168566404814239892023-09-04T15:33:51.512-04:002023-09-04T15:33:51.512-04:00That's what I'm doing in the ACKS Greyhawk...That's what I'm doing in the ACKS Greyhawk game as well, I'm using simpler BX style alignment (Law vs Chaos) where one side stands for civilization the other stands for it's destruction.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18031181424520125213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353391426294254427.post-61230623099743939492023-09-04T14:12:35.021-04:002023-09-04T14:12:35.021-04:00Orcs (and their kin) are not just misunderstood IM...Orcs (and their kin) are not just misunderstood IMC. My preference is often to just use other humans as antagonists. Although when I ran my B/X megadungeon, I recast orcs as human adventurers that had spent too much time in the dungeon and gone feral, regressing to a bestial savagery. And my PCs were on quite friendly terms with my more folkloric goblins, at least until it became clear the goblins were turning children into more goblins and it became necessary to stop that.

These days I am mainly interested in Dungeon Crawl Classics, which promotes an philosophy of making monsters unique in each adventure. So you might encounter a group of savage humanoids that do all the "orc stuff" and try to kill the PCs for no reason except they are violent brutes, but the characters would never be already familiar with them to say, "Oh, those are orcs, they're like that." Are there other groups of these humanoids that are friendly and civilized? Maybe, but you may never find out. All that matters is this group of monsters in the adventure at hand.Jesse Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10802754799848483493noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353391426294254427.post-16267831624353166942023-09-04T01:20:35.334-04:002023-09-04T01:20:35.334-04:00I like the original idea of law v chaos.
