CoC lends itself to creative staging. It's got me looking for "Grace Under Pressure" - I like all the stuff Pagan Publishing used to do.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18031181424520125213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353391426294254427.post-48458141926010828022011-12-22T19:51:55.161-05:002011-12-22T19:51:55.161-05:00Call of Cthulhu was the second RPG I ever played. ...Call of Cthulhu was the second RPG I ever played. Bet you can geuss the first.
I was introduced to H.P. Lovecraft's fiction and the Call of Cthulhu game at the same time by one of my best friends.
He basically told me to read a couple stories and then we would play the game.
I've been hooked on the fiction and the game ever since.Timothy Paul Schaeferhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12279725399542404987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353391426294254427.post-15230798108637730512011-12-22T18:07:46.205-05:002011-12-22T18:07:46.205-05:00That very same boxed set was my first introduction...That very same boxed set was my first introduction to roleplaying - thanks to an ahead-of-his-time relative. At aged nine I didn't have the first idea about what it all meant, and it languished on my bookshelf until we'd played Dragon Warriors, got our heads around roleplaying, and then picked it up again.

Nowadays I try to squeeze in at least one CoC session a year. Last year we played the fantastic "Grace Under Pressure" module on New Year's Eve: a one-off, modern-day adventure set on a deep sea mining vessel. Very much like "the Abyss" in feel. On the spur of the moment, we used Skype to handle the moments when people went out in their pressure suits or into the deep-sea exploration vessels. Half the players were in one room, in the dark, speaking into the laptop. The rest of us were in the light, looking at their flickering images on the screen. I could use messenger to type secret messages to those upstairs, telling them what they saw. It was one of the best sessions I've ever run.

Damn, I love that game. Will Doylehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14450333306587720236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353391426294254427.post-33182309769520900262011-12-22T12:30:32.487-05:002011-12-22T12:30:32.487-05:00HPL is one of my earliest influences. I didn't know exactly what it was about the work when I was a child, but I knew I had never read anything like it.

I had to be born during the 'drought' period when many items were available only from Derleth Inc. It slowed the process, but I bought whatever I could find.

I finally accomplished one of my own goals when I started the Darkness over Dunwich blog recently after becoming completely addicted to the new FFG game 'Elder Sign' and then 'Arkham Horror' (I had always wanted to play the RPG but only got strange looks from people whenever I mentioned we should try it) and am slowly expanding the scope out to his life and works.

I look forward to your posts.xhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17814063435676111475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353391426294254427.post-5564518698389001612011-12-22T11:09:36.913-05:002011-12-22T11:09:36.913-05:00Price is an interesting person, at one point I hea...Price is an interesting person, at one point I heard his comparison of The Dunwich Horror with the gospels and there were startling relationships (whether they were conscious or not on HPL's part). Price does remind me of an acquaintance who went to seminary, spent quite a few years teaching, and has become more and more of a cynical religious skeptic as he aged.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18031181424520125213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353391426294254427.post-37273306774175988802011-12-22T09:12:08.088-05:002011-12-22T09:12:08.088-05:00I'm actually reading Mountains of Madness at t...I'm actually reading Mountains of Madness at the moment :)Simon Forsterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01243845335993440168noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4353391426294254427.post-51824117021134640542011-12-22T08:15:59.166-05:002011-12-22T08:15:59.166-05:00Great post. Always interesting to get a sense for other's literary journeys.

On Price, he's not exactly the most orthodox religious thinker, though. He's pretty sure his seminary teaching days are behind him, and he's been a Unitarian/Universalist minister since (though he longer does that even).Treyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04647628467658839351noreply@blogger.com
